Frequently Asked Questions

Find expert answers to common questions regarding diamond buying, gold purity, and fine jewelry care.

What are the 4Cs of diamond quality?

The 4Cs refer to Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. These are the globally accepted standards established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for assessing the quality and value of a diamond.

Cut: Determines the sparkle and brilliance of the diamond. It refers to how well the diamond's facets interact with light.
Color: Grades the lack of tint in a diamond. A perfectly colorless diamond is graded D.
Clarity: Measures the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and external characteristics (blemishes).
Carat: Refers to the physical weight of the diamond, not its size.

What is the difference between 14K, 18K, and 24K gold?

Karat (K) measures the purity of gold. Pure gold is extremely soft and malleable, so it is often mixed with other metals (alloys) like copper, silver, or palladium to increase its strength and durability for jewelry.

  • 24K Gold: 100% pure gold. It is highly valued but generally considered too soft for fine jewelry that is worn daily.
  • 18K Gold: 75% pure gold mixed with 25% alloys. It offers a rich, deep yellow color and is an excellent choice for luxury pieces and engagement rings.
  • 14K Gold: 58.3% pure gold mixed with 41.7% alloys. It is the most popular choice for wedding bands and everyday jewelry because it strikes the perfect balance between durability, affordability, and beautiful color.

How do I determine my ring size?

You can measure your ring size accurately at home by wrapping a piece of string or a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger. Mark the point where the ends meet, and then measure the length in millimeters with a ruler. Once you have the circumference in millimeters, you can use our Interactive Ring Size Calculator on the Tools page to find your exact US, UK, or European fit. Remember to measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its largest.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are absolutely real diamonds. They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural mined diamonds. Even a trained gemologist cannot tell the difference with the naked eye or a standard jeweler's loupe. The only difference is their origin; lab-grown diamonds are created in a highly controlled laboratory environment using advanced technological processes (CVD or HPHT) that simulate the extreme heat and pressure of the earth's mantle.

How should I clean and care for my fine jewelry?

Proper care ensures your fine jewelry lasts a lifetime. For most hard gemstones like diamonds, sapphires, and rubies set in gold or platinum:

  • Create a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Soak the jewelry for 10-15 minutes to loosen dirt and oils.
  • Gently scrub the piece, paying special attention to the back of the stone and the setting, using a very soft-bristled toothbrush (like a baby toothbrush).
  • Rinse thoroughly under warm running water (make sure the drain is closed!).
  • Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Warning: Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners. For delicate porous stones like pearls, opals, or emeralds, do not soak them or use ultrasonic cleaners; simply wipe them with a damp, soft cloth.
