The Four C's of Diamond Buying
Cut (The Most Important)
Shape refers to the physical outline (Round, Oval, etc.), but Cut refers to how well the diamond's facets interact with light. A well-cut diamond will sparkle brilliantly even if the color or clarity is lower. Always prioritize Cut over the other C's.
Color
Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). For white gold or platinum settings, stick to H or above. For yellow gold settings, you can drop down to J or K, as the yellow metal will mask the slight warmth in the stone anyway, saving you money.
Clarity
Clarity grades the tiny imperfections (inclusions) inside the stone. VS2 and SI1 are the "sweet spots." To the naked eye, they look identical to a flawless diamond, but they cost significantly less.
Carat
Carat measures weight, not physical size. A 1-carat Oval will look much larger on the finger than a 1-carat Round because the Oval carries more of its weight on the top surface (the "spread").
